The Pope makes a bold call for 鈥減rudence, rigorous evaluation and even, at times, a slower pace in adopting AI.鈥  This demanding, ethical standard stings a little in an industry obsessed with speed, but when you understand that human welfare is at great risk, it鈥檚 the only wise course of action. Sometimes the right move is to slow down, widen your aperture of concern, so we don鈥檛 release technology that weakens people鈥檚 interior capacities in the process for mere material reasons.   We must restore our understanding of the immaterial and instrumental goods that St. Thomas Aquinas so generously explicated.

Every design choice we make sends a message to the world. This brutal reality should make every developer pause and recollect, rectifying their profession with their faith. Are we building technology that treats people as monetizable and nudge-able collections of neurotransmitters, or as ensouled persons with great dignity?

Known to many simply as 鈥淒oc,鈥 Dr. Gregory earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Loyola University Chicago in 1980 and his medical degree from Rush Medical College in 1984. He completed his General Surgery residency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, followed by a fellowship in Surgical and Anesthesia Critical Care at The Ohio State University.聽

Throughout his medical career, Dr. Gregory served as professor of surgery at three American universities and held international academic appointments, including a professorship at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, he has published extensively in medical journals and contributed chapters to major surgical textbooks. His professional work consistently emphasized medical education, mentorship, and formation.

Dr. Gregory also served his country with distinction in the United States Navy, including service as Director of Trauma for Joint Coalition Naval Forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following his retirement from medicine in 2020, Dr. Gregory served his local community through the Boy Scouts of America as a Unit Commissioner, before he devoted himself more fully to Catholic ministry and community service. In 2023, he was appointed as the first formal Director of Religious Education for his parish and school community following the establishment of the ministry by Pope Francis in the 2021 motu proprio Antiquum Ministerium. In this role, he provides leadership and oversight for faith formation and educational ministries.

Dr. Gregory remains deeply active in Church and community life through OCIA, youth ministry, prison ministry, pro-life outreach, fatherhood mentoring, and service with the Knights of Columbus as a Fourth Degree Knight. Dr. Gregory is the proud parent of five children and grandparent of ten grandchildren. His wife, Sara Gaines, PharmD, is also active in the Church serving as an extraordinary minister, and is active in the rosary club, among other initiatives.

prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. 鈥淭here are three things by which faith stands firm, devotion
remains constant, and virtue endures: prayer, fasting, and alms.鈥 He goes on to say that
although each has its distinct work, these three are so closely united that they must be
performed in consort; although they take different forms according to one鈥檚 duty of state, bodily
strength, and finances, no one should neglect them. As he exhorts: 鈥渓et prayer, alms, and
fasting be one single plea to God on our behalf, one speech in our defense, a threefold united
prayer in our favor.鈥

In the parable of the sower, Our Lord speaks of those who persevere through trial but bear no
fruit. These bear no fruit because they are choked by thorns, which Jesus explains are cares,
riches, and pleasures. St. John speaks of these thorns in another way in his first letter: he calls
them lust of the flesh (pleasures), lust of the eyes (riches) and pride of life (cares). That lust of
the flesh is pleasures is clear: each of us has experienced the way the flesh desires something
and 鈥榣usts鈥 after it, irritating us until we give in. The most vehement example is sexual desire,
and for that reason such desire is also the most destructive when engaged in, but it also applies
to other goods like food, drink, and rest. Over time, these pleasures choke us if we seek them
for their own sake and not as a means to a higher end.


Riches is lust of the eyes, since the eyes see all the things they desire, much like when Satan
took Jesus on high and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. Lust of the eyes sees
money, security, houses, cars, vacations, clothing, shoes, books, tools, gadgets鈥攚hatever they
can see, the eyes can desire in this way and this desire begins to choke when it overtakes and
smothers spiritual desire. And cares are pride of life because they entail a desire to control
one鈥檚 life rather than submitting to God. Pride of life chokes us because it undermines the good
that would come from openness to the divine will and trust in his providence.


The remedies to these three threats are the works of Lent: prayer, fasting, and alms. Fasting
works against the lust of the flesh by cutting off pleasures at their starting point, which is through
food. Almsgiving combats the lust of the eyes by being free with what one possesses, looking
upon riches as something to be used rather than hoarded. And prayer works against pride of
life by putting one鈥檚 cares in the sight of God and truly desiring the kingdom of God before all
else.

This Board brings together leading theologians and Church leaders who provide critical academic insight in support of our Theology Department鈥檚 mission to cultivate rigorous intellectual formation while always maintaining fidelity to the Catholic tradition.

The Most Rev. Timothy Broglio, JCD

The Theology Advisory Board is chaired by The Most Rev. Timothy Broglio, JCD. Archbishop Broglio serves as Archbishop for the Military Services, USA. He previously served as president of the USCCB, as well as in the Vatican diplomatic corps and as Apostolic Nuncio to the Dominican Republic and Apostolic Delegate to Puerto Rico. He holds a doctorate in canon law and has extensive experience in ecclesial governance and pastoral leadership at both the national and international levels.

Julia D

Julia Dezelski, STD, serves as Associate Director of Marriage and Family Life at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. She holds a doctorate in sacred theology and has extensive experience in catechesis, evangelization, and pastoral ministry, particularly in the areas of marriage, family life, and the transmission of the faith within the domestic Church.

Navarro

Rev. Luis Navarro, JD, JCD, is a canon lawyer and member of the Holy See鈥檚 Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. He has served for many years as a professor of canon law and has contributed to the Church鈥檚 work in the areas of ecclesial governance, the vocation of the laity, and the juridical structures that support the life and mission of the Church worldwide.

Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ, PhD

Rev. Robert Spitzer, SJ, PhD, is President of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith and a widely recognized scholar, author, and speaker on the relationship between faith, science, and philosophy. He previously served as President of Gonzaga University and has written extensively on topics related to metaphysics, ethics, and the intellectual foundations of Catholic belief.

Rev. Thomas Joseph White, OP, serves as Rector Magnificus of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome.
